Advent at St. Michael's

The question with which the liturgical year confronts us is a direct one: what does the life of Jesus now mean to us?--Joan Chittister

On November 29th, the Christian church begins again a new year where we together travel through the rhythms and seasons that direct us to the life and death of Jesus. With the arrival of Advent, we begin that part of the journey to explore what Jesus means to us now with the experiencing of waiting. We wait with the prophets and dreamers of old for God to do God's new thing. We wait for this Christmas, when Jesus, God-in-the-flesh comes into the world as a vulnerable infant. We wait with early and present church for Jesus to come again to make all things new. What does it mean to wait?

During Advent at St. Michael's, we will gather for Wednesday evening prayer at 7PM on December 2, 9, 16. We will sing Holden Evening Prayer, which includes the Magnificat (Mary's Song).

Our weekly Sunday worship (9AM!) will guide us to look forward with all who hoped for and hope now for renewal.

Upcoming "High Holy Days" of Autumn

On October 25th, St. Michael's celebrates Reformation Sunday, calling to mind our heritage as Christians of a Lutheran perspective. We will sing songs written by Martin Luther and explore what it means to be "beggars" who receive the free grace of God.

On November 1st, we will observe All Saints Day, remembering those in our lives who have died during the past year. This will be a worship with lots of music, as well as a time of candle-lighting, and celebrating Holy Communion.

On November 22nd, the church year comes to a close with Christ the King Sunday. We will call to mind the ultimate victory of Jesus Christ over sin, death, and the devil and the great renewal that awaits the world.

Come and worship with us during these "High Holy Days" of Autumn!

July/August Sermon series: Ephesians

As we enter the dog days of summer, we turn our attention to the letter to the Ephesians. This New Testament letter roots the salvation of the world in God's gracious action in Jesus Christ, the fulfillment of God's love for the world.

All are welcome at worship with Holy Communion at 9am on the first and third Sundays each month and Morning Prayer on the second and fourth Sundays at the same time.

Pubsong!

All are welcome to gather and sing out on the deck, or just sit and take in the view of the lake. Pastor Jeff will be there at 5pm for supper and conversation.

June/July Sermon Series: 2 Corinthians

To begin the summer months, we will explore together Paul's 2nd letter to the church at Corinth. In this letter Paul is fighting to keep a foot in the door of a congregation that is falling out of love with him. The issues we will explore in 2nd Corinthians are relevant to the struggles of our present day churches and lives. Come and explore the meaning of 2nd Corinthians for you!

All are welcome at worship with Holy Communion on the first and third Sunday of the month at 9 AM or at Morning Prayer on the second and fourth Sundays at the same time.

Lutheran Disaster Response and the Nepal Earthquake

Nepal Area Earthquake

The Situation:
Sections of the city’s historic center lie in rubble. News reports indicate that more than 3,500 people have died and thousands are injured in the valley surrounding Kathmandu. The death toll is expected to rise as people are believed to be trapped under rubble. Deaths have been reported in neighboring India, Tibet and Bangladesh. The tremor also set off a deadly avalanche on Mount Everest.

Our Response:
Lutheran Disaster Response is committed to walking with our brothers and sisters in Nepal, as rescue efforts and assessments continue. The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) has launched an immediate large-scale emergency response with its emergency team in Kathmandu at the LWF offices, which have escaped the worst impact of the quake. The ELCA is the only U.S. member church of the LWF. We are also working with Lutheran World Relief and church partners from ACT Alliance to coordinate the response, which includes the distribution of immediate life-saving supplies such as water, food, shelter and medication to people injured.

What Can You Do?

Pray:
Pray for people affected by the earthquake and its aftershocks, especially as they grieve the loss of loved ones and property. Pray for the LWF and Lutheran World Relief emergency teams on the ground, who are standing with people and communities affected.

Give:
Your gifts designated for the “Nepal Area Earthquake” will be used in full (100 percent) to assist those directly impacted. Gifts from people like you allow us to continue our response.
